One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.” He said, “Then I thank you from my heart.”
As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.
Year’s later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.
Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She began to read the following words:
“Paid in full with one glass of milk”
Signed, Dr. Howard Kelly.
It is true that we get what we give. When we help the people around us, we are helping ourselves. I have a point why Iput this story here.
One day I went To Guruvayoor during Dusshera holidays and as you can imagine there was lot of rush in the temple and it was difficult to have Darshan of the Lord. I was lucky enough to have his Darshan. My mother who was with me was tired and we sat inside the temple for sometime.SuddenlyI felt that I must see the Lord once again.I dont know what prompted me to think like that but I really wanted a darshan again because something was incomplete.
But whenI looked at the long Queue, I thought it cannot be possible. When I told this to my mother she said, it is better to go back to room as it was closing time and we can have darshan in the evening.
I looked at the time and it was 12:50pm.Only 10 minutes for the temple to close. I waited anxiously and decided that I must wait and try and get one last chance and I believed that I can. Which was that power telling me to stay back!
My mother repeatedly requested me to forget it and go with her to room. But I was adamant. Meanwhile I saw that someone in the Queue fall down due to giddiness on account of long standing. I was outside the Queue line and someone called for help. The lady was almost near to the door for Lord’s darshan and didn’t want to go out of the queue. I realized I need to help her and so gave a bottle of water to her which quenced her thirst. She was feeling better now and she resumed her queue line to have darshan. She thanked me and said one word “You will” . I did not understand why she said that!
My mother who was with me said that she cannot wait for me and she left saying that my waiting will be fruitless.Meanwhile a minute later when my mother left, from somewhere a group of devotees with temple influence was allowed to enter the sanctum through a small gate for darshan. I was standing there thinking of Lord Krishna. Unknowingly, the guard called me to enter in soon and have darshan. For a minute I couldnt believe what happened! I was thrilled for letting in.
I did go in and saw Lord Krishna with a gladdened heart full of love and felt complete. I came out and almost cried with happiness. I could still see the long queue of people still waiting for darshan.
I was amazed at these events.I didnt know what prompted me for a second darshan and didn’t know why that lady told me “You will”. I didn’t know why the Guard let me in and didn’t know why I got a second chance. I felt as if Lord Krishna only wanted to see me again or it was just my imagination to satisfy myself.I still dont know the answer.
Whatever the point may be, ultimately I was happy.
